Royston Tan – 881

“881” by award winning director Royston Tan is a raucous musical about “getai” performers during the annual Chinese “Hungry Ghost Festival”. “Getai” is well known for its loud colours, tacky lighting effects and elaborately costumed singers on a make-shift stage, performing mainly in the Hokkien dialect to entertain the living as well as the dearly departed.

The colours and typefaces on the titleblock create a suitably ostentatious look complete with detailed textures and stardust, evoking a magical feeling tinged with a heavy dose of tacky nostalgia.
