GET IN TOUCHInspired by victory podiums, this bench is a fitting tribute to the National Stadium – a well-loved venue over the years for countless sporting, cultural, and national events. In a way, it had set many benchmarks.
Viewed from the front and back, the deliberate omission of horizontal planks reveal the Chinese characters “一”, “二” and “三”, representing the first, second and third placed competitor’s place on the podium. Likewise when viewed from the top, the Roman numerals “I”, “II” and “III” are displayed. With its three levels, the bench invites adults and children to rest, play and exercise on. While it is inherently human to strive for first place, Benchmark Sat allows its user to choose a preferred seat, comfortably setting his or her own benchmark.
Benchmark Sat was exhibited at Dhoby Ghaut Green and is currently housed at the foyer of the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA). The art piece will make its final home at the new Singapore Sports Hub.
A collaborative project initiated by Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA), FARM and Singapore Furniture Industries Council (SFIC), Bench is a design competition that enables everyone to remember the former National Stadium in a special way. The old National Stadium was closed on 30 June 2007 to make way for the Singapore Sports Hub and a new Singapore National Stadium in 2014. The old National Stadium had many memories for everyone – both on a personal and national level.
&Larry was part of 25 designers and artists commissioned to recapture and rethink their memories by designing an outdoor bench made from actual wooden planks salvaged from the stadium.
