2019 marks the 25th anniversary of the rebirth of one of Germany’s most storied watchmaking companies, A. Lange & Söhne.
Long an admirer of the brand’s immaculate design and technical innovation, creative director Larry Peh was invited along with Su Jia Xian of SJX Watches to help curate a special exhibition on 25th September at ION Sky.
The result is a unique collection of artworks and installations by lighting designer Takeo Sugamata / SWITCH, designer Eisuke Tachikawa / NOSIGNER, paper sculptor Ashley Yeo, artist Heman Chong, tattoo artist Benjamin Laukis, and Larry Peh himself.
Themed around 'Never Stand Still', the personal motto of Walter Lange, each of the artworks celebrated different aspects of A. Lange & Söhne’s oeuvre.
Larry’s contribution is titled Bearing On Our Future – a freeform arrangement of 25,000 ball bearings of various sizes in a custom-built enclosure.
The choice of material speaks to a sphere’s inherent dynamicism; it is naturally reactive to surfaces and outside forces, ever moving towards a new equilibrium. This installation visualises the constant challenge of creative minds to effect change in our world while adapting to and flowing with opposing forces. Guests were encouraged to run their hands through the sea of bearings, thereby exerting their own will on the shape of reality.
